CHAPTER EIGHTEEN

FEATHER

Feather's sleep, as short as it was, turned out to be the most productive night of the year. She got up and wrote down exactly what she'd learned.

Jayden said to take care of the portal. I am the portal she was talking about. If I don't take care of myself, I will fall apart. Starting today, I'm coming up with a plan to change my life for the better. I'm going to get rid of some of this stress.

When Tug appeared four hours later, rubbing his eyes, he paused in the doorway.

"Are you really up at this hour? Every time I suggest going for a run at sunrise you tell me it's illegal."

She stood and kissed him on the cheek. "I figured it out. Not all of it, but one of the messages I've been getting. Turmoil threatens to explode the portal. I'm the portal, Tug. The spirit was warning me that I need to make changes in my life."

"Isn't that what we decided when you were taken to the emergency room? What’s changed?"

She took his hands and spun him around. "Everything, my dear. I've spent the night making plans to change my life and yours."

Tug sat down at the table and looked at her worriedly. "I hope that doesn't mean you're kicking me to the curb. I was just getting used to your middle-of-the-night burps."

"No, silly. I decided I'm going to put the salon up for sale."

"What? Feath, you love that place! Why would you do that?"

"I love my work. I don't love dealing with the drama between stylists or leaky pipes. I want to cut hair and go home at the end of the day and do other things, like talk to ghosts."

Tug studied her face. "Okay, I guess that makes sense."

Feather went to the refrigerator and removed a bottle of green juice. She shook it well and poured it into a glass before setting it in front of him.

"Your Tug Juice is so much better with cucumber. I'm glad you made that change."

He took a big swig and set the glass on the table. "Don't keep me in suspense. You didn't spend four hours making one decision."

"I'm going to use the money from the sale of my salon to buy a warehouse."

Tug grinned. "What are we warehousing?"

"It's not 'we', it's you. This will be the factory location for Tug Bars. Since the salon was a gift, I don't owe any money on it. That means the entire amount from the sale will go into buying a nice big place. We can get a loan for industrial baking equipment so you can start distributing them outside of Charming."

Tug stared at her, blinking rapidly.

He reached for her and she moved to his lap, wrapping her arms around his neck. His voice cracked as he said, "Feath, that's the kindest thing anyone has ever done for me. But I can't let you spend your money on me. You should use it to open a proper paranormal detective agency."

"I'll do that in the front of the building.
